Name of man shot by Sioux City police released

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sioux City police have released the name of the man injured after an officer-involved shooting in the Greenville neighborhood.

According to police, 43-year-old Jamie Orozco was shot and killed on Sunday, October 20, while hiding from authorities at a home in Sioux City.

According to police, this incident began around 7:22 p.m. Sunday when a woman called 911 after a man approached her in the 2600 block of Correctionville Road. That man, later identified as Orozco, reportedly had a loaded handgun and displayed it in a “threatening manner” before walking away. According to police, the woman was not injured in this incident.

Police later located Orozco walking near Leech Ave and South Fairmount Street. When officers confronted the man, he reportedly walked away and pulled a gun out of his pocket.

“After being instructed to stop and drop the weapon, the suspect ran away from officers. During the pursuit on foot, the suspect shot at the officers. An officer returned fire. The suspect continued to flee toward Greenville, where officers lost sight of him,” Sioux City police said in a news release.

Sioux City police called additional officers and the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

As authorities cordoned off the area, police asked residents in the Greenville area to shelter in place until the situation was resolved.

The SCPD SWAT team was dispatched to the area and an investigation led officers to search the home at 2519 East 1st Street. According to police, Orozco was in a crawl space on the second floor of the home.

Orozco reportedly refused to surrender multiple times, and SWAT officers shot Orozco when he apparently reached for his gun.

After Orozco was subdued, police initiated life-saving measures and he was taken to a local hospital with a life-threatening injury, according to police. Orozco was eventually taken to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for further treatment and remains in critical condition as of Thursday, October 24th.

No gunshot wounds were reported among law enforcement officers in this incident.

The Sioux City Police Department and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation are in charge of the ongoing investigation.
