Men’s tennis sends three to inaugural SLC Fall Championships

HAMMOND, La. – Three members of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s tennis team will compete in the inaugural Southland Conference (SLC) fall championship this weekend at the Southeastern Tennis Complex in Hammond, Louisiana.

The doubles and singles winners of this singles tennis tournament qualify for the ITA Conference Masters Championship in San Diego, which takes place from November 7th to 10th. The tournament serves as a path to the NCAA singles and doubles championships, which will be played in the fall for the first time this season as part of a two-year pilot program.

Redshirt junior Sam Whitehead and in the second year Ivo Isqueiro will team up to represent the Vaqueros in doubles. They begin their tournament run on Friday at 9 a.m. against Marcell Marki/Max Lindstedt from Nicholls.

Second semester Santiago Serrano will compete in singles for UTRGV. He will play a first-round game against fourth-seeded Matthew Ambruster of New Orleans on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

The tournament follows a one-and-done format. If the Vaqueros win their opening games on Friday, they will play the semifinals on Saturday. Whitehead/Isqueiro would face the No. 1 doubles team of NJIT’s Pablo Perez Ramos/Wil Jenkins at 10 a.m., while Santiago would face No. 1 seed Ramos in the second round at 2 p.m. The men’s doubles championship is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and the singles championship at 12:30 p.m., both on Sundays.
