Fenerbahce vs Manchester United LIVE: Europa League result and final standings after Jose Mourinho was sent off

Fenerbahce vs Manchester United LIVE: Europa League result and final standings after Jose Mourinho was sent off

Mourinho claims his United team could still win the 2018 Premier League title

Jose Mourinho was sent off as Fenerbahce held his former club Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side winless in three European games this season.

Mourinho was sent off by referee Clement Turpin midway through the second half after requesting a penalty. The 61-year-old watched the rest of the game from the stands.

It came shortly after Youssef En-Nesyri equalized for Fenerbahce, beating Andre Onana with a downward header after the Manchester United goalkeeper made a brilliant double save before half-time.

United’s defense was weak and had pulled back after Christian Eriksen’s opener after 15 minutes, when the midfielder finished off a clever counterattack.

After previous draws against FC Twente and Porto, United remain winless in the Europa League. It is now a year since their last European Cup win: a 1-0 win against Copenhagen at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho steals the show to tell Manchester United what they are missing

Jose Mourinho’s red cards are usually seen as red herrings, but Thursday night’s card probably served that purpose for Erik ten Hag. A wild game with many subplots provided perhaps the most entertaining shows in Europe this season, although not all for good reasons or with any real payoff.

That’s Manchester United on the pitch and Mourinho off it. The Portuguese failed to get any real “revenge” on his old club, but United have now also failed to gain a lead in every single Europa League game this season. This stark 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce was the third draw out of three, with all the positive aspects once again offset by obvious flaws. Youssef En-Nesyri, who ended Ten Hag’s first United European Championship in Sevilla in 2022/23, ended any sense of momentum after victory over Brentford.

There was also the drama of Mourinho being sent off somewhat harshly for complaining about the way a penalty claim was dismissed. The cuts to Ten Hag’s predecessor in moving here meant that Ten Hag’s current problems were not subject to the same scrutiny. United can’t seem to get any form going. This was actually a regression to a different problem.

Jose Mourinho reacts to ‘unbelievable’ red card against Manchester United

Jose Mourinho was at his best when he described referee Clement Turpin as the “best in the world” after he was sent off during Fenerbahce’s draw with his former club Manchester United in the Europa League.

“I don’t want to talk about it. [After the match] The referee told me something unbelievable. At the same time he said he could see the action in the penalty area and my behavior on the touchline. I congratulate him because he is absolutely incredible. During the game, 100 miles an hour, he had an eye on the penalty situation and an eye on my behavior on the bench.

“That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world!”

FULL TIME! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

On TNT Sports, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says Erik ten Hag’s side are in a “terrible position” in the Europa League.

“You have to say about the two results: Porto away, difficult game, good draw. Fenerbahce away, good draw. It was the home game that was really disappointing, the Twente game, these are the teams we should beat,” he says.

United have also blown a lead in all three Europa League games this season.

Smile before kick-off. I’m not sure Mourinho will be that happy now. We will hopefully hear from both managers soon.

FULL TIME! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

Strangely, very little happened in the game after Mourinho’s red card. The last half hour went badly after what had been an entertaining competition up to that point.

Is it a decent draw for United? Fenerbahce is always a difficult place. But given the pressure already on Ten Hag, he probably needed more.

FULL TIME! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

Well, that sums it up! United had a free kick right in Fenerbahce’s half. Instead of aiming for the penalty area, they bring it back to Andre Onana and the referee blows the whistle for full time.

A good result for José Mourinho’s team. A bad record for Erik ten Hag as United are still winless in the Europa League.

For the first time since 1981, they have now gone six games in a row without a win in Europe.

90+2 minutes: Terrible challenge from Muldur on Amad, he flies in and doesn’t even get close to the ball. This is a clear yellow card and gives United a free kick from a good position on the corner of the penalty area.
