Florida is suing the Justice Department, claiming it prevented the state from investigating the Trump assassination attempt

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a lawsuit alleging that the U.S. Department of Justice is unfairly preventing the state from carrying out an alleged assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump last month investigate.

Lawyers in Moody’s office filed the lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in federal court in Fort Pierce on Wednesday. The lawsuit alleges that the FBI, part of the Justice Department, prevented state authorities from investigating whether accused gunman Ryan Routh committed violations of state law.

More Florida politics:

Routh, 58, was discovered by a U.S. Secret Service agent hiding in the bushes with a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, the site where the former president – and current Republican presidential candidate – played golf.

A Secret Service agent shot Routh, who fled and was captured after driving away. Federal officials have filed charges against Routh, but Moody maintains that a state investigation could lead to additional charges, possibly including attempted murder.

“Every day that Florida is prevented from investigating, it becomes more difficult to prove the state’s case in court,” the lawsuit says. “In contrast, the federal government suffers no harm from Florida investigating federal crimes because the state has no intention of interfering with or obstructing federal investigations.”
