Police are investigating a shooting in downtown Berkeley that may have resulted in a man being hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

Details were limited, but police received multiple reports of shots fired near Berkeley Way and Henry Street just after 2:30 p.m

Berkeley police responded quickly to interview witnesses and search for surveillance footage that may have captured the shooting.

While officers were responding to Berkeley Way, a call came in from Highland Hospital regarding the appearance of a possible gunshot victim from Berkeley.

A resident told The Scanner there was a shootout between people who left in several vehicles, one of which was reportedly traveling north on Milvia Street.

They said two men fired shots at close range. A man was shot in the back.

“At first I thought it was blanks because I didn’t see any blood,” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “But there is damage everywhere.”

The resident shared photos that appeared to show property damage from gunfire on the block, including a broken window and what appeared to be a bullet hole in a parked car.

After the shooting, officers also found casings on the street.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
