Randall team tennis wins second UIL state championship in three years

WACO, Texas (KFDA) – The Randall Raiders are state champions again.

Randall won the 2024 4A Team Tennis UIL State Championship on Thursday, defeating the Wills Point Tigers 10-4.

Not only is this the first state championship awarded to the Texas Panhandle this year, it is also the first state championship ever.

We met the Raiders on Sports Drive while they were on the bus back to Amarillo.

“I was really excited,” freshman Jensen Betzen said. “I mean, some tennis teams go their entire tennis career without even making the playoffs and they would kill to be in that position.”

This is the second state championship for Randall team tennis in the last three years.

“You know, since it’s our last game of the season, why don’t we just go out there and shower some encouragement?” said assistant coach Billy Ceniceros. “Leave everything on the field and do something special.”

To put Randall’s dominance in perspective, this is her third straight state tournament and second championship during that span.

Two years ago they beat Boerne 10-8 in the championship round.

Last year they lost in the semifinals to the Wimberley Texans.

That year they were in second place overall for most of the year, while Wimberley took first place. Yesterday they took revenge on the Texans and advanced to the championship round. This morning they managed to win it all.
