The fatal knifeman’s family speaks out after the judge granted the suspected killer bail

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A woman accused of stabbing and killing another woman in Myrtle Beach escaped behind bars.

On Thursday, a judge granted 57-year-old Flora Pickett bail at $100,000.

Pickett is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The charges stem from a knife attack more than a year ago in the early morning hours of Oct. 11 in the 800 block of Nance Street.

When officers arrived, they found 59-year-old starlet Jackson still breathing and conscious but unresponsive to questions.

She was taken to hospital, where she died a few days later.

On Thursday, Jackson’s family urged the judge in court not to release Pickett on bail.

“Right now I just feel like it’s too soon,” Jackson’s niece said.

The family said they are still picking up the pieces and healing a year after the brutal attack.

“It’s only been a year. And then when someone dies for that matter, it takes a little time to heal,” Jackson’s niece said.

She thought of her aunt and said she will always remember her as a creative person who loved others with all her heart.

During her hearing, Pickett’s attorney asked a judge to issue bail for his client after he had already spent nearly a year in prison.

Pickett’s attorney claimed the two women had known each other for about 20 years.

“She had no beef with her. She had no malice against her. She had no reason to harm her or do anything to her,” Pickett’s attorney said.

At a previous bail hearing in December, it was brought up that Pickett had allegedly spoken to another inmate about the fatal stabbing. The conversation was recorded on camera and audio at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. However, during Thursday’s hearing, Pickett’s attorney argued that law enforcement misunderstood his client’s words.

“Law enforcement heard the words ‘She had to go,’ and in turn heard my client confess to the murder. I hear, “He had to go,” and that “He had to go.” “Refers to a man… who abused my client,” Pickett’s attorney said.

After the judge set bail, Jackson’s family faced the reality that Pickett could be released from prison. Despite the unthinkable, the family said they chose to remain positive and keep Jackson’s name alive.

“It irritated me, but it’s life. “You’ll get through it anyway,” Jackson’s niece said.

If Pickett can post bail, she will be on house arrest with a GPS monitor.
