Top West Valley general elections to watch

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – These are the local races that will be closely watched in the 2024 general election for communities in the West Valley. Population growth and demographic change are leading to major changes in the region.

buckeye

Prop 481 would allow Southwest Gas to access streets, alleys and public lands in the Buckeye metropolitan area to provide natural gas services under a so-called “franchise agreement.” In return, the Buckeye company will provide 2% of the utility’s gross revenue in the city.

Glendale

If Prop 499 passes, employees at large hotels and event centers would be required to receive a minimum wage of $20 per hour, up from $5.65 per hour. It could also go up to $40 per hour per shift.

The measure also introduces working conditions laws in Glendale, allowing employees to work no more than 10 hours per day without written permission and placing restrictions on the number of rooms staff can clean.

A labor standards department will also be established to implement and monitor the provisions of the proposal.

Critics say it’s unclear where the money to fund the new department will come from while the cost of raising the minimum wage will be passed on to consumers.
