Senator Sanders and Gerald Malloy discuss immigration, abortion, taxes and more in the WCAX Senate debate

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – It was a heated debate about age and rhetoric. Gerald Malloy and Bernie Sanders may agree on some things: cutting defense spending, securing the border, loving their families, but they might not be at opposite ends of the spectrum on divisive issues like climate change and abortion.

“Every scientist in the world, I think they’ve even said, believes we’re in an existential climate crisis, that’s not true at all,” Malloy said.

“The state of Vermont has overwhelmingly enshrined the right to abortion in our own constitution. Do you think you represent Vermont’s views if you think it was okay for the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v. “Wade tipped?” Sanders said.

Malloy, a West Point graduate and businessman, says he has what it takes to get Vermont’s economy on a more stable footing.

Senator Sanders, who has served as a state senator since 2007, says his track record speaks for itself. “Because of my experience and seniority, I did not feel I could give up representing Vermont at this difficult moment,” he said.

The two brought the essence of their campaigns to the WCAX studio. Sanders says he wants a more progressive income tax to make health care more affordable, reduce military spending, particularly in Israel, and regulate multibillion-dollar technology companies.

“Humanity is developing technologies for productivity, and this should benefit workers, not just big corporations,” Sanders said.

Malloy says he wants to take a tougher stance on immigration, focus on public safety and, most importantly, unseat Senator Sanders and bring new blood from Vermont into Congress.

No matter what message appeals to you, you can vote for him on November 5th.
