Hoboken girls tennis makes history, wins Hudson County tournament

In 2021, Hoboken revived its girls tennis program after a seven-year hiatus.

Four years later, the top-seeded Redwings defeated third-seeded Kearny 3-2 in the Hudson County Tournament final to capture their first-ever title at Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Sylvie Strell topped Samantha Cheng again at third singles, 4-6, 7-5, (10-7).

In first doubles, Lila McDonough and Meghan Stehli also beat Fizza Raza and Kamily Bravo 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, and in second singles Laura Scott defeated Valeria Valencia 7-6, 6-1 to give Hoboken three Points.

The Redwings crowned their strong season with 18:2.

For Kearny (13-8), Juliet Olsen won 7-5, 6-1 at first singles and at second doubles, Natalie Terrero and Keyla Petrillo won 6-2, 4-6 (10-7) over Yazleen Rivera and Anna Rekeda.

On Tuesday, Kearny defeated second seed McNair, the defending champion, in the semifinals.

Next week, the HCIAL will hold its annual individual flight tournament on Monday and Tuesday in Lincoln Park.
