OpenAI reportedly plans to release its Orion AI model by December

OpenAI reportedly plans to release its next groundbreaking AI model, codenamed Orion, within the company by December this year, The Verge reported on Thursday. Unlike previous versions, the company reportedly plans to gradually roll out the model to trusted partners before rolling it out more widely via ChatGPT.

An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that the report was incorrect, but declined to elaborate.

The Verge writes that Microsoft engineers expect to gain access to Orion as early as November, although it’s unclear what OpenAI will ultimately call the model. The o1 model series was codenamed “Strawberry” for months before its release in OpenAI.

There’s a lot on the horizon when it comes to releasing OpenAI’s next frontier model. The AI startup just raised $6.6 billion in funding at a valuation of $157 billion, and investors expect OpenAI to continue bringing increasingly powerful models to market to lead the tech world.
