DNR releases muskies at the Olin Park Boat Launch in Madison

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, along with the help of Capital City Muskies Inc., released muskies at the Olin Park Boat Launch on Thursday.

This annual event has been held for the past four decades. Great Lake spotted fish, a type of muskie, were released for the first time on Thursday.

They were born in the spring and raised by volunteers at the Wild Rose DNR Hatchery. They were raised until they were big enough to be released.

Officials said muskies are considered apex predators, giving them a familiar nickname for fishermen.

“They’re nicknamed the fish of 10,000 casts,” said Greg Voss, chief stocking officer of Capitol City Muskies Inc. “So you have to be dedicated and go on a lot of trips and have fun.”

Officials said the muskies released Thursday won’t be ready for fishing for two or three years.

Over 2,700 muskies are released into the Madison Area Lakes.
