It’s no exaggeration to say that No. 18 Ole Miss’s College Football Playoff hopes, according to most college football sportsbooks, rest on doing what should be easy: beating Oklahoma. But the Rebels have already emerged as heavy favorites this season, losing at home to Kentucky as a 15-point favorite.

But the Sooners have deeper problems as they continue their quarterback indecision and make deeper changes in the building. Jackson Arnold is back at the helm as QB1, but with the wide receiver room still extremely tight, the question becomes: How important will it really matter who is behind center? The game script should be simple for Ole Miss: Get up early and let the Sooners run after you, something they simply haven’t proven in back-to-back embarrassing losses to Texas and South Carolina. Another loss for OU will continue a disappointing SEC debut, but if the game somehow gets close, Ole Miss’ defense will have to prove it can make a key stop when needed with the game on the line. Their inability to do so is why their postseason hopes are currently just one loss away from being effectively ended – and that’s before they play Georgia next month.

Oklahoma vs. Ole Miss: What you need to know

Oklahoma has a new play-caller: Tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley has taken over as offensive coordinator and game manager after Seth Littrell was fired for running an offense that just couldn’t get going. But how much of that was really Littrell’s fault, with a wide receiver room decimated by injuries and an offensive line that failed to match up with multiple balls out of the portal? Littrell is Norman’s favorite son and captain of the 2000 national team. Perhaps coach Brent Venables is hoping to have the same luck as his predecessor, Bob Stoops, when he fired Josh Heupel and hired Lincoln Riley.

Help on the way for Arnold? If Arnold returns to the starting role, he will at least have a chance to get one of his top five wide receivers back, as Deion Burks was listed as questionable in the first SEC availability report of the week. Burks hasn’t played since his mid-September loss to Tennessee and Arnold will need all the help he can get to keep up with the Ole Miss offense.

Key piece could help rebels: It may be bad news for Arnold and the Sooners, but Ole Miss could get a huge boost if edge rusher Princely Umanmielen can return to action after missing the last two games due to injury. Ole Miss ranks second nationally in tackles for loss and seventh in sacks.

Oklahoma vs Ole Miss Prediction, Tips

This is a game that is a good fit for people who are looking at the grand total. Ole Miss has a potent offense designed to put up scores of points, but Oklahoma’s defense is one of the best in the SEC. It stands to reason that the Sooners could get enough stops in the red zone to convert sevens into threes and help the bettors. On offense, it’s doubtful that OU, with all of its offensive problems, will have much success no matter who plays quarterback. Selection: Under 49
