Men’s tennis caps off a strong weekend at the ITA Regionals

Bison Men’s Tennis completed another weekend of play at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at the University of Pennsylvania.

All four juniors competed in singles and doubles matches. “We had an outstanding weekend competing against the best teams in the region,” said head coach Jason Cohen. “We won against Penn State, UPenn, St John’s, Monmouth, Villanova and Drexel, among others, all very strong programs.”

On Thursday, October 17, the Bison finished with an individual record of 4-2. Adam Stavrakas ’26 led with two wins, defeating Lehigh 6-3, 6-2 and Drexel 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega ’26 won his first match against Villanova 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, but lost his next against Penn 7-6, 6-2. Brendan McDonald ’26 also won his first game 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 against Hofstra before narrowly losing to St. John’s. Amar Tahirovic ’26 received a bye and started play on Friday.

The Bison carried the momentum into Friday, winning two singles and two doubles matches.

Stavrakas continued his winning streak from Thursday by winning his match against Monmouth 6-1, 6-4. Tahirovic opened his first game of the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Drexel at 3 p.m.

The doubleheaders also began Friday morning with wins for the Bison. Stavrakas and Bain picked up an 8-6 win over Penn State. Tahirovic and McDonald also won 8-6 against opponents from St. John’s.

The weekend continued for the Bison on Saturday as Bain and Stavrakas advanced to the top 16 in doubles. They earned an 8-5 win over their Penn opponents to advance to Sunday’s game. Tahirovic also made it into the top 16 in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Saint Joseph’s. However, the junior lost his next game against Penn State 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Stavrakas qualified through the top 32, but also lost his fourth game 7-6, 6-3 against NJIT. McDonald and Tahirovic also suffered a tough 8-6 loss to Princeton.

The Orange and Blue ended Sunday’s game with an 8-6 loss to Bain and Stavrakas against Delaware opponents.

“I think my personal highlight was the way our team competed. No matter which team we played, we went into the game with the belief that we would win, which helped us a lot,” coach Cohen shared. “Some of the same guys who just competed at the ITAs will be competing again this weekend, so this week is really about recovering and being 100% and just staying fit and keeping the momentum going.”

The Bison will continue their season on Friday, October 25th at West Point for the Patriot League Qualifiers.
