Colorado officer recalls kangaroo chase caught on camera

DURANGO, Colo. (KKTV) – Officer Zoe Preskorn has been with the Durango Police Department for about a year and a half… but she said an interesting call in September was a first for her.

“When I first heard the call, I just hoped it was real,” Preskorn told 11 News. “I was hoping there was actually a kangaroo hopping around somewhere.”

Durango police received this call on Sept. 18 from someone walking home from work: “I know I sound crazy, this isn’t a prank call, it’s really like a little two-foot kangaroo is coming along bouncing around in a diaper.”

Bodycam footage from Preskorn and other responders showed this very real kangaroo hopping around downtown Durango as officers laughed at the unusual situation and tried to figure out how to catch a kangaroo.

“It was like, ‘Oh my God, there’s a kangaroo,'” Preskorn said when asked about her immediate reaction to seeing a kangaroo on the streets of Durango. “Then it was very quickly, ‘OK, how are we going to get this thing, catch it and figure out what to do with it?'”

Preskorn said gratefully that the kangaroo’s owners were also on the lookout for the kangaroo and had joined the effort to capture it.

“We had a great time with the owner and everyone was just happy that the kangaroo was coming home,” Preskorn recalled. “He seemed… to know who his owner was, jumped over and into his owner’s arms.”

Durango police shared a video of the incident on social media Wednesday, and Preskorn said it was fun to see the public’s reaction to the situation.

“It’s kind of funny, you know, someone has a kangaroo, you definitely don’t see that every day, but everyone seems carefree and having fun with it.”
