Thomas University is looking forward to a big date with Keizer after earning its first win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – After four straight losses to start the year, the Thomas University Night Hawks finally got their first win of the season last Saturday against Warner, a win that evened their conference record at 1-1.

Head coach Orlando Mitjans said it was the first time all season that his team had successfully completed all three phases of the game and his team had made progress compared to previous games, which was a positive sign for the future.

“We had a few situations during the game where things didn’t go our way, but instead of the young man just saying, ‘Here we go again,’ they persevered,” he said. “I thought we had a really good week of training last week, which also affected the way we played on Saturday. So for us it’s repetition. I think our guys are excited, I know the coaching staff is excited to go against the number one team in the country.”

Thomas will have his hands full Saturday when he takes on Keizer, the reigning national champion and No. 1 team in the country. The Seahawks are 5-0, but three of those wins have been single-possession victories, including an overtime win in the season opener.

“They handled these close games brilliantly and achieved a W,” said Mitjans. “We just hope we can keep it close. As long as we can play hard for four quarters, I can’t complain.”

Kickoff against the Seahawks on Saturday is at 7 a.m. in Thomasville.
