Trick-or-treating hours are set – here are tips on how to protect little ghouls and goblins

Calling all ghosts, goblins, princesses, pirates and trick-or-treaters of all characters.

Trick-or-Treat 2024 in Boone County will be held on Thursday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m., like most areas in Northern Kentucky. The cities of Florence, Union, Walton, Covington, Newport and others have also set a trick-or-treat time from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween, as have most local cities and unincorporated areas. (For trick-or-treat hours, check your city’s website.)

Trick-or-Treating is not a county-sponsored event, but the county and many of its cities set specific hours to promote safe trick-or-treating. Residents interested in handing out candy to costumed children of all ages are asked to turn on the lights on their porch during the designated time.

This Halloween tradition is enjoyed by many children, families and the young at heart. The houses feature oversized spider webs, friendly bouncy castles and (sometimes) spooky scenes to add atmosphere. Children plan for months to find and create the perfect costume. Adults enjoy the evening together while accompanying children around the neighborhood.

Keep the holiday full of treats and no tricks with these Halloween safety tips.

• Choose costumes that are reflective, fit well and are flame retardant.
• Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street.
• Consider non-toxic makeup or hats instead of a mask that limits your child’s vision.
• Have children carry glow sticks or flashlights to improve visibility.
• Remind children of allergies or other treats that are forbidden.
• Cross the street at street corners or crosswalks.

Drivers should also watch out for trick-or-treaters.

• Walk slowly through neighborhoods with lots of trick-or-treaters.
• Turn on your headlights before the sun goes down.
• Watch out for children between parked cars.
• Take extra time at intersections and stop signs to ensure the road is clear.
• Put your phone away and avoid other distractions while driving.
