Panda Watch: Hong Kong cubs’ tails become rounder and begin to ‘disappear’ after 70 days

Panda Watch is a weekly blog from the Post that tracks the latest on the twin panda cubs – the first to be born in Hong Kong – until they are ready to be introduced to the public. To read our previous blog entries, click Here.

Hong Kong’s panda cubs are almost 70 days old and their tails are starting to “disappear” as they become rounder.

In a social media post, Ocean Park explained that the tail is one-fifth the length of newborn pandas, but appears to “disappear” in adult pandas.

“During their development, the growth of the tail is not as rapid as that of their body, so in adult pandas the tail-to-body ratio decreases to one in 10,” the park said.

Adult pandas have their tails tucked tightly into their round butts, which are full of fluffy hair, making them less visible, according to the park.

Animal keeper Elke Wu revealed that as the twin babies got older, some personality traits emerged.
