After weeks of speculation, the Nevada women’s volleyball team’s game against San Jose State has been officially canceled.

Nevada did not meet the six-player minimum for a game. The university sent out a statement Thursday evening.

“Due to an insufficient number of players to compete, the University of Nevada women’s volleyball team will not play its scheduled Mountain West Conference game at San Jose State on Saturday, October 26,” University of Nevada’s Reno said . “Per Mountain West Conference policy, the game will be considered a conference loss for Nevada.”

The game has been in the national news for weeks after a majority of Nevada’s volleyball players voted to forfeit the game against San Jose State. However, the university stated that it could not legally abandon the game due to the Nevada Constitution.

Brian Sandoval, president of the university, said despite the law, players have a First Amendment right not to play and there would be no penalty for choosing not to play the game.

A dozen players, including Nevada co-captain Sia Liilii, will be at the Little Waldorf on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. for a “Women’s Sports Are for Women Only” rally. The game against the Spartans was scheduled for 12 p.m. the same day.

The game was originally scheduled to take place in Reno, but both schools mutually agreed to move the game to San Jose. As a result, Nevada has not been able to cover any travel expenses since the transfer.

With the official cancellation, Nevada will suffer a loss in conference play. This comes just an hour after Nevada lost a road game to Fresno State and will now be 11-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Many Nevada players are also still pursuing a possible lawsuit against the university involving Joey Gilbert, a local defense attorney, and UNR alumni.
