3 drinking games to survive the Walz-Vance duel

3 drinking games to survive the Walz-Vance duel

Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will debate Tuesday evening in New York City.

In normal presidential elections, the vice presidential debate is not one of the most important events of the election cycle. But the truncated election campaign between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump could brighten the spotlight.

The 90-minute debate will be moderated by CBS’s Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan. It will air on the channel and stream on the CBS News app, as well as on Paramount+ and YouTube.

USA TODAY will also stream CBS News’ simulcast of the vice president debate on the USA TODAY channel, available on most smart TVs and devices.

Here are three drinking games to help you get through the debate.

Spicy USA TODAY Presidential Debate Bingo

While USA TODAY’s Vice Presidential Debate Bingo game should be entertaining, here’s an option to add some spice to the game:

  • Each person will receive a USA TODAY bingo card

  • A number of shot glasses equal to the number of players are filled with various liquids (hot sauce, pickle juice, alcohol if age and age appropriate, etc.) and numbered

  • The first person to reach Bingo on the card drinks the first shot glass

  • Subsequent bingo callers take the shot corresponding to the order in which they call out bingo

  • The game ends when all players have called bingo

Debate foul, party foul

The rules set by CBS for Tuesday night are largely the same as presidential debates that have taken place so far this cycle, in that microphones will be turned off, there will be no studio audience and moderators can enforce time limits.

According to the Associated Press, moderators will not fact-check candidates live, leaving the task to the organization’s fact-checking website, CBS Confirmed, and its social media.

Still, it is highly unlikely that the debate will go smoothly and at least one of the candidates will break any of the rules. This is where this game comes into play.

In Debate Foul, Party Foul, each player should have a sip drink, a shot drink, and a specific drink that is particularly bad (e.g. hot sauce or Malort).

  • Take a sip every time a participant tries to speak beyond their allotted time

  • Make a recording whenever a participant tries to shout through a muted microphone

  • Finish the drink in front of you as one of the participants leaves their podium

  • Take a shot of the designated drink as one of the participants leaves the stage

The CBS Broadcast Studios will be decorated on September 30, 2024, one day before the CBS News vice presidential debate between Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz.

Line by line, sip by sip

Knowledge of political clichés is a double-edged sword in this game, depending on how quickly the player wants to drink.

  • Each player chooses a political cliché or expected line, such as: “my fellow Americans” or “We the People.”

  • Players select a drink and determine the amount of that drink that constitutes a sip.

  • Every time the political cliché or expected phrase is spoken, the player drinks.

  • The first person to finish the drink wins.
