7 QBs to start or sit

play

Fantasy football owners could get some reinforcements at quarterback in Week 8. Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa could make his first start since suffering a concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, adding another potential QB1 to the fantasy football rankings.

Week 8 is also a rare midseason week where there are no teams on byes, giving fantasy football managers a full pool of quarterbacks to choose from.

Of course, there are still some big injury question marks. Many are wondering if Jameis Winston will get a chance to start for the Cleveland Browns after Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon. There are also questions about whether the New Orleans Saints will use Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener while their starter Derek Carr is out for another week.

These players likely won’t be staples in starting/sitting decisions in standard fantasy lineups, but players in SuperFlex leagues should pay close attention to their status. In the meantime, these streaming quarterbacks will be looking for some high-end options on a waiver wire that should be full of viable starters.

NFL POWER RANKINGS WEEK 8: Bucs, Vikings slip into reshuffled NFC picture

Here’s a breakdown of the quarterbacks to trust and fade in Week 8 of the fantasy football season.

Fantasy Football starts them: Week 8 QBs

Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers (at Jacksonville Jaguars)

At this point in the season, any good quarterback facing the Jaguars should be considered a must-start in fantasy football. Love qualifies because he is averaging 270.2 passing yards and three touchdowns per game this season. Meanwhile, the Jaguars have allowed the second-most passing yards (1,996) and most touchdown passes (16) to quarterbacks this year, and have just barely let Drake Maye look good against them.

Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons (at Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Cousins threw for 509 yards and five touchdowns the last time he played against the Buccaneers. He may not have that kind of production in their rematch, but he should be able to throw well against a Tampa Bay secondary that just gave up five passing touchdowns to Lamar Jackson, the second-most among quarterbacks this season Fantasy points allowed per game (22.0).

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears (at Washington Commanders)

Williams is coming off a bye week and is playing with a Washington defense that has allowed quarterbacks 12 passing touchdowns in 2024, tied for the fifth-most touchdowns in the NFL. Williams has scored multiple touchdowns in three of his last five games and should be able to continue his success against the Commanders. Washington’s offense may not be as strong with Jayden Daniels (ribs) out, so Williams may get better field position and more scoring opportunities than usual in Week 8.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos (vs. Carolina Panthers)

Nix has an appealing matchup against the Panthers in Week 8. Carolina has allowed multiple passing touchdowns in all but one game during the 2024 NFL season. The Panthers have also allowed the 10th-most passing yards to quarterbacks, giving Nix a higher ceiling than usual. Add to that the fact that he has consecutive games with at least 61 yards rushing and he looks like a sneaky good DFS player or a quality QB2 in SuperFlex leagues.

FANTASY FOOTBALL DROPS WEEK 8: 5 Players You Should Consider

Fantasy Football Sit ‘Em: Week 8 QBs

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (with Las Vegas Raiders)

Mahomes is still a top quarterback, but he can’t be trusted in fantasy right now. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown since Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers and will face a strong Raiders defense in Week 8. Las Vegas hasn’t allowed a passing touchdown since Week 5 and has limited its last three opponents to 180 passing yards or fewer.

Mahomes may want to avenge Kansas City’s Week 16 loss to the Raiders last season, but it’s hard to believe he can do that when he’s without Rashee Rice (knee), Hollywood Brown (shoulder) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (hamstring). ) large numbers sets up his disposal.

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins (vs. Arizona Cardinals)

Tagovailoa’s status for Week 8 remains unclear, but he has a chance to return from his most recent concussion against the Cardinals. While Arizona allows the fifth-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks (18.5), their defense has allowed one or fewer passing touchdowns in four of seven games this season. The Dolphins may also want to get Tagovailoa back in action, so they could opt for a run-heavy game plan to beat the Cardinals.

Tagovailoa may also be rusty, so it may be best to keep him on the bench for a week just to see how he fares with his injury. In Week 8, he’s a high-ceiling, low-floor option.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers (at Dallas Cowboys)

Like Tagovailoa, Purdy has a good matchup in Week 8 against a Cowboys defense that is allowing the sixth-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks (18.4). That will make him seem like an attractive starter to some, but keep in mind he’ll be without Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and possibly Deebo Samuel (illness) in Week 8. That will dilute his arsenal with Christian McCaffrey (calf) still out and George Kittle (foot) and Jauan Jennings (hip) also hit.

Purdy could still have a solid game, but he has scored a touchdown or less in four of his seven starts this season. His floor is too low in this matchup, which could lead to a bigger defensive struggle than most expect.
