Wednesday season 2 potential release date, cast and more

Wednesday season 2 potential release date, cast and more

Wednesday’s season two is creeping closer and closer, and fans have received some teaser treats courtesy of Netflix’s Geeked Week.

One of the best things to come out of the Netflix event was the latest teaser/behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the second season (head to the trailer section to see it).

It backed up lead actor Jenna Ortega’s claim that the sophomore season is set to have a “darker tone”, as Ortega has stepped into the producer’s chair for the first time for the show’s second outing.

Those who are keen to be reunited with Wednesday a little sooner can get a dose of the macabre now with a Wednesday-inspired Monster High doll.

However, if Wednesday in her iconic prom dress or Nevermore uniform isn’t enough to satiate your appetite for all things dark and dreary, you’ll be pleased to learn that production for season two has been going on since May 2024.

Even more excitingly, a raft of big names will be joining the cast for the Netflix smash hit, including the likes of Joanna Lumley, Billie Piper, Christopher Lloyd, Thandiwe Newton and Steve Buscemi.

For those desperate for new episodes, here’s everything we know about when Wednesday season two could land on Netflix and what the new season could hold.

When is Wednesday season 2’s potential release date?

Wednesday season two is well on the way, with filming ongoing as we speak.

But when it comes to a release date, it has already been confirmed that Wednesday season two will not be returning to Netflix until at least 2025.

The long wait for the show’s return is likely related to production grinding to a halt in 2023 because of the Hollywood strikes.

Things have been back to business for quite some time now, with Wednesday being relocated from its original filming home of Romania to County Wicklow, Ireland, making Wednesday the largest production (in regards to spend) in the country’s history, according to Screen Ireland (via Independent).

However, the knock-on effect from the strikes has been long-lasting, especially for shows like Wednesday that need budget and time for that stunning VFX work.

That said, Wednesday‘s first season went into production in September 2021 and ended in March 2022. The show then premiered on November 16, 2022.

If season two follows a similar pattern, fans can hopefully expect an August/September 2025 release date.

While the wait may feel excruciatingly long, Enid actor Emma Myers has promised that season two will be worth the wait. When asked how filming was going, Myers told Digital Spy: “It’s good, because people have high expectations of it, and honestly this season is gonna live up to it.

“I really enjoyed the scripts this season. I think there’s a lot of fun things to look forward to, so yeah, I think it will be worth the long wait.”

Who is in the Wednesday season 2 cast?

Wednesday without Jenna Ortega is like Wednesday without Thing, it doesn’t exist. What universe would allow such chaos?

However, while Ortega undoubtedly felt some nerves stepping into the role of producer for the first time this season, it seemed she also was nervous about returning to the character.

“I was a little terrified just because it had been years since Wednesday, since we shot the first one.” Ortega admitted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “We did that like two or three years ago in Romania.”

She went on to share that she quickly found her feet.

“I just was, I think, overthinking it,” Ortega said. “But as soon as you put on the costumes by Colleen Atwood, you get hair and makeup done, and then you take all the expression out of your face, it’s like, ‘Oh, okay. I kind of, I know how to do this.'”

Ortega has spoken about her co-star Percy Hynes White‘s exit ahead of season two.

His absence was first noted when his name was noticeably left off the returning cast list when it was announced earlier this year.

As Wednesday’s almost-love interest Xavier, Hynes White was expected to play a pivotal part in season two and was among the people suspected to be Wednesday’s mystery texter.

Commenting on his departure, Ortega told Vanity Fair that Hynes White leaving has been “a weird redirect, but we’re introducing so many different characters that I think it kind of will get lost”. She added that Wednesday’s “world does feel slightly askew anyway”.

Hynes White is not the only series regular who won’t be back for season two. Jamie McShane and Naomi J Ogawa, who play Sheriff Donovan Galpin and Yoko Tanaka, respectively, have also exited.

Still, as Ortega said, Wednesday season two is getting a fresh injection of life as it welcomes a whole new host of cast members.

Joanna Lumley will guest-star as Grandmama alongside Steve Buscemi‘s series regular character principal Barry Dort. However, the newbie roster for season two doesn’t end there.

Billie Piper will also be a brand-new addition to the Nevermore gang as series regular Capri. She is joined by new series regulars Evie Templeton, Owen Painter and Noah Taylor, whose roles are yet to be disclosed.

As for the new guest stars ringing in the season two semester, there will be Thandiwe Newton as Dr Fairburn, plus Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo and Joonas Suotamo (aka Chewbacca from the Star Wars sequels).

We’re still waiting on a Cousin Itt casting announcement (just saying). Someone’s got to be willing to don a mass of overgrown hair for the role, surely…

Catherine Zeta-Jones officially confirmed her return as Morticia Addams in June, and we suspect the following will round out the Wednesday season two cast:

Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
George Farmer as Ajax Petropolus
Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester

There has been no mention yet of the oily Ms Thornhill’s return, but we’re keeping everything crossed that Christina Ricci will be back in the role, as she didn’t quite succeed in her ambitions during season one.

As it turns out, the seemingly sweet teacher was in cahoots with the Hyde (aka Tyler) and was out to get the outcasts. She was ultimately defeated by a swarm of Eugene’s angry bees, followed by a swift face-stomping courtesy of Wednesday – but defeated doesn’t mean gone for good.

After all, Ricci was asked about a potential return while speaking to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for Yellowjackets season two – and she said that she’s down for it! If she gets the chance, of course.

“I don’t think I’m allowed to say,” she explained, adding: “On my end, the door is open. She was so fun to play! It’s always so fun to play a villain.”

Meanwhile, Gwendoline Christie‘s Larissa Weems may have bitten the big one, but there was something a little ambiguous about her death. After all, her story arc did seem somewhat cut short and resurrections are a thing in this world.

However, those hoping that Christie will reprise her role should brace themselves for terrible news.

With Buscemi stepping into the role of Barry Dort – Nevermore’s new principal – there may not be any room for Christie and those starch-crisp collars, at least not as Larissa Weems.

We, however, favour Enid’s sunny optimism, and so, as fans of Weems and her pointed knowing stares, we’d like to believe that she wouldn’t stand for being ousted – death or no death.

Christie herself seems to have the same idea and even told Digital Spy: “We haven’t seen her put in the ground, have we? I feel like Larissa Weems would not really be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death.” Curious…

That said, The Sandman season two is officially on the way, and is still in production, much like Wednesday.

Many will know that Christie plays the deliciously devilish Lucifer in the comic-book adaptation, and as that is a pivotal role, it’s possible that there could be schedule conflicts. Fingers crossed that this isn’t the case, as Christie is addictively good as both Lucifer and Weems, and we must have both!

On the other hand, poor Doctor Kinbott’s fate was not so ambiguous. Slashed and gashed, Riki Lindhome‘s character is unlikely to have survived the Hyde attack and, thus, will probably not be back for season two.

What will happen in Wednesday season 2?

The plot for Wednesday season two is tightly under wraps (almost as if Wednesday herself had a hand in binding it).

However, despite Netflix’s tight-lipped approach, Ortega let slip to Vanity Fair that along with more viral moments to rival her season one self-composed prom dance, season two will also have a darker tone.

“I think the feel that we’re going for is a little bit more horror-inspired,” Ortega revealed, sharing that they were inspired by The Masque of the Red Death, the 1964 film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story.

“Not to say that suddenly we’re the goriest show of all time,” the Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice actor elaborated. “I mean, there’s six-year-olds watching.”

She added: “We’re doing this thing now where Wednesday just kind of appears. She is a little bit of a jump scare herself.”

Intrigued? Well, we won’t get much more than that for now, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty to ponder over before that 2025 release date. Loose strings were left flapping in the breeze at the end of Wednesday season one, and they need addressing… urgently.

Wednesday’s discovery that her boyfriend was the monster terrorising Nevermore is the kind of heartbreak she didn’t seem to revel in, despite her penchant for pain.

As a double dose of betrayal, he was being controlled by teacher-favourite Ms Thornhill, who turned out to be a bitter normie who had an axe to grind with the outcasts.

We doubt that Tyler will continue to be Ms Thornhill’s controlled “pet”, but we’re almost certain he escaped. And we’re even more sure that he’ll resurface in Wednesday’s life – whether that’s as a friend, lover or foe, though, is yet to be determined.

Related: Has Wednesday‘s season two villain been revealed?

However, Hunter Doohan, who plays Tyler, has his theories on the fate of his character. Speaking to Digital Spy in an exclusive interview, he said he was certain Tyler managed to evade the clutches of the law.

“I do think he escaped at the end. When I read that on the page, I was so excited. I was like: ‘Come on, don’t be dead, don’t be dead,'” he said.

When it comes to which version of Tyler (good or bad), we could see in season two, Doohan’s remark about his season one arc sheds some light.

“I think he was being controlled by Miss Thornhill,” said Doohan. “Then he had to go manipulate Wednesday to carry out their plan. And I think he did a pretty good job with it.”

If he was indeed being manipulated, it could mean that redemption is on the cards for him. There could be other villains worth keeping an eye on, however.

A few times, the show name-dropped the ominous presence of the Morning Songs, a cult-like group run by Bianca’s siren mother, capable of luring in new members. Bianca’s mother coerced her into agreeing to join them, to strengthen their persuasive call.

There’s surely room and scope to elevate the Morning Songs to main villain status in Wednesday season two. Watch this space.

One thing that needs clearing up is the identity of the mystery texter. Not long after Xavier gifts Wednesday a brand-new phone, she receives a cryptic, threatening text message complete with stalker-y photos of herself.

The sender? Well, that’s unknown, but it’s just the kind of danger that’s sure to light Wednesday’s soul on fire. It’s also something that will help set the wheels of a season two story in motion.

The showrunners have also explained how they want to explore the Addams family’s relationships in more detail, telling TVLine: “We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters, and the actors are so amazing in those roles.

“Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”

Speaking of complicated relationships. Enid and Wednesday got off to a rocky start before developing a deep affection for one another. Was it romantic? Many sure hope it was but those shipping a Wednesday-Enid match might be disappointed – at least during season two.

Responding to those hoping for a love match between the two, Myers shared that she had different hopes for season two.

“As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness,” she said.

“She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”

Will there be a Wednesday spinoff?

Rumours have been circulating that Netflix is working on an Uncle Fester spinoff.

Reportedly, the streaming service is hoping to expand Wednesday into a wider universe, which means several more Addams Family shows could follow.

If the whispers are to be believed, the spinoff is in the early stages of discussion, and talent and storyline details are still being fleshed out – which means we’re still a long way from anything concrete.

Wednesday season 2 trailer: When can I watch it?

The latest Wednesday season-two trailer has us pumped for more, but true to form, the details are scarce.

As Wednesday herself put it, “If we showed you any more, it would make your eyes bleed”, and guys, she’s not that generous.

It does, however, hint tonally at a very dark and twisted follow-up to its first season that matches its debut, and did we sneak a peek at Wednesday leading some kind of cause/movement/charge?

The fist-pump in the air insinuates something in that vein, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Fans scrambling for even more scraps of information may have spotted something curious on Instagram. Ortega and Myers took to the social platform to share a playful post as their characters Enid and Wednesday.

Those with a keen, Wednesday-like eye for detail may have noticed that the pair were wearing different Nevermore uniform costumes to that of season one. If this video was indeed done on set (which is plausible as filming is currently ongoing) it could suggest a wardrobe upgrade.

However the teaser trailer doesn’t quite support this as the flashes we do see of them in their costume look a lot like that from season one.

Maybe the shift happens midway through the new season? Who knows? We’ll have to wait to find out.

In the meantime, don’t mind us, we’re vigilantly on the lookout for more trailers, which are certain to come.

All episodes of Wednesday are available to stream now on Netflix.
