McKinley football players didn’t respect the marching band

I went to the McKinley-Jackson football game on October 18th. Before kickoff, the McKinley band played a pretty spectacular version of “Script Ohio.” They were precise and I sat there a little amazed to see something so neat.

However, they were interrupted as they completed their practice when McKinley players stormed the field before kickoff. Instead of waiting or even turning around, they decided otherwise. It was a classless and senseless act.

I commend Repository sportswriter Josh Weir, who wrote: “The McKinley marching band was playing ‘Script Ohio’ when the football team entered the field and nearly collided with band members. A traffic jam of football players, band members and cheerleaders near the sideline gave an indication of what kind of night it would be for the Bulldogs.

A hint might be an understatement. If you ask any objective fan, they’ll probably agree that McKinley lost 20-7 when he was coached, outplayed and outplayed.

I’ve spoken to several people, both fans and others associated with the band, and they said this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Really? Did the coaching staff support and/or encourage such measures?

Band members at area schools work just as hard as other athletes to prepare for their performances. I sat on the McKinley side expecting to encourage my hometown team. What I and many others experienced instead was a lack of respect and sportsmanship.
