Kwarcinski sets pool record. Nighthawk swimmers record victories – The Newtown Bee

The Newtown High School girls swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season with a win – and a record setting – as the Nighthawks defeated visiting New Fairfield on Oct. 18 behind Alexa Kwarcinski’s pool record mark of 2:12.00 in the 200 -yard medley race then defeated Masuk of Monroe on Senior Night on October 22nd. Kwarcinski set a record that had stood since 1998 when Patricia Finnerty recorded a time of 2:12.32.

The Nighthawks defeated New Fairfield 93-76, but took the victory in the 500-meter freestyle race by a 93-32 margin and had a strong performance in the final four events.

Newtown’s 200 medley relay team of Emily Metzker, Kwarcinski, Lillian Accettella and Kaila Sullivan was first at 2:05.98. Accettella won the 50 free in 27.55.

In the diving competition, Shannon O’Donnell took first place with a score of 169.1.

Maddie Marcisz won the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:06.63. Sierra Marx took first place in the 100 free with a time of 59.84. Angela Wennerholm won the 500m with her final touch in 6:00.03.

The 200 m free relay team of Marcisz, Metzker, Marx and Wennerholm had the fastest time of 1:54.57. Petertonjes led the way in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:04.50. Kwarcinski finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.35.

The 400 free relay consisting of Petertonjes, Bridget Gioffe, Accettella and Kwarcinski finished the race in 4:09.60.

Metzker, Kwarcinski, Accettella and Wennerholm won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:01.83.

Petertonjes was first in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.33. Accettella won the 200 IM in 2:25.69. Kwarcinski was first in the 50m sprint, finishing in 24.90.

Masuk had the top three diving scores, but Grace Kase of Newtown had a personal best score of 153.85. O’Donnell, who recovered from a preseason injury to return to competition in the second half of the season, had a score of 171.2 and Aliyah Reuther recorded a score of 169.45.

Petertonjes was the fastest finisher in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:00.07. Accettella won the 100m in 59.10. Wennerholm took first place in the 500m race with a time of 6:01.20.

The 200 free relay with Accettella, Indigo Land, Marx and Marcisz took first place with a time of 1:52.56. Metzker had Newtown’s best time in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing second with a time of 1:10.18. Kwarcinski won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:07.62, just under the pool record of 1:07.60.

The 400 free relay with Wennerholm, Metzker, Petertonjes and Kwarcinski took first place with a time of 4:06.53.

Newtown will compete in the South-West Conference Championships with the diving competition at New Fairfield High on Wednesday, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. and the swimming competition at Masuks Pool on Saturday, November 2. The swimming portion of the championships has been moved to an early start time of 1 p.m.
