7 Movies to Watch After “Woman of the Hour”

Netflix’s latest original, Woman of the Hour, is a stranger-than-fiction true crime thriller that’s already making a big splash. We’re big fans of it here at Tom’s Guide too; My colleague Rory Mellon called “Woman of the Hour” “one of the best films of the year.”

The chilling new release marks the directorial debut of Anna Kendrick (who also stars) and focuses on the crimes of Rodney Alcala (played by Daniel Zovatto), particularly his decision to appear on the loose in an episode of The Dating Game .

It’s easy to see why “Woman of the Hour” hit No. 1 upon its release on October 18: It’s a confident, spooky crime thriller with a unique introduction, but one that doesn’t lose sight of the fact that Alcalas Victims have been let down by the world and the systems around them.

The film specifically revolves around reporters Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley) and Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) – the journalists who first linked the murders and attributed them to a serial killer – and observes how they confronted the sexism of the time and the Challenging skepticism by following the story while the murderer is on the loose

While I (and many film critics) would argue that Anna Kendrick’s film is the better watch, Joe Berlinger’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile seems a fitting suggestion.

Based on Elizabeth Kendall’s memoir, The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy, this 2019 Netflix film tells the story of serial killer Ted Bundy’s crimes through the eyes of Kendall (Lily Collins), Bundy’s then-partner . Despite being accused of skimming the surface of Bundy’s crimes and coming across as a little uneven, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” is worth watching for Efron’s central performance alone.

“Memories of a Murder” (2003)

Bong Joon-ho’s “Memories of Murder” is a remarkable crime thriller based on the Hwaseong serial murders of the 1980s, considered South Korea’s first high-profile serial killer case, which was still unsolved at the time of the film’s production.

The film is set in 1986 and follows detectives Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) and Cho Yong-koo (Kim Roi-ha) to a South Korean province to solve a double murder. Using their basic investigative skills, the two work to unmask the killer while claiming more and more lives.

Memories of Murder is every bit as well-directed as the director’s later, better-known films (Parasite, for example) and will undoubtedly be a perfect sequel for anyone looking for another true crime story.

“Monsters” (2003)

As we’ve previously noted, “Woman of the Hour” is Kendrick’s directorial debut, and the 2003 crime drama “Monster” marked the same milestone, the same milestone for “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins. The similarities don’t stop there, as “Monster” also revolves around the crimes of a serial killer.

Jenkins’ film follows the life of sex worker Aileen “Lee” Wuornos (played here by Charlize Theron). After moving to Florida and developing a relationship with Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), Aileen kills seven clients between 1989 and 1990 and uses their money to support herself and Selby. As the body count rises, Selby begins to suspect that Aileen may be responsible.

In a discussion of “Woman of the Hour” with Letterboxd, director Anna Kendrick said that the Coen Brothers’ 2007 neo-Western was “perhaps the most obvious influence on the film just by looking at it”…which makes it a perfect movie makes movie that you should look for after streaming Woman of the Hour if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men centers on a group of characters held together by a lack of money. The stash is first discovered (and stolen) at the scene of a drug deal gone wrong by Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin). Moss is hunted by brutal killer Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who leaves violence in his wake even though Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is on his trail.

“A Simple Favor” (2018)

If you want to watch a lighter Anna Kendrick movie (one that doesn’t involve a prolific serial killer), then my wildcard suggestion is “A Simple Favor.” The stakes are lower and easier on your nerves, but it’s still an entertaining ride.

This twisty film about Paul Feig follows mild-mannered widow and mother vlogger Stephanie (Kendrick) who befriends Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a high-profile local mother who works for a fashion company.

Stephanie looks after Emily while she and her husband Sean (Henry Golding) are away… but Emily never returns to pick up her son. Stephanie soon sets out to find out the fate of her new friend. She soon becomes embroiled in a bizarre mystery that only gets crazier as she tries to get to the bottom of her new best friend’s disappearance.
