‘The Last Airbender’ Announces Release Date for New Graphic Novel

The next graphic novel in Avatar: The Last Airbender Chronicles was recently announced at New York Comic Con, with the cover and release date now revealed to fans. The upcoming release titled Ashes of the academy, will accompany Zuko’s half-sister Kiyi during her time at the Fire Nation’s Royal Fire Academy for Girls.

Ashes of the Academy was officially announced on October 18th at New York Comic Con, followed shortly thereafter by an announcement post on X (formerly Twitter) by publisher Dark Horse Comics. The upcoming novel tells the story of Kiyi, Fire Lord Zuko’s half-sister, as she attends the strict and prestigious Royal Fire Academy for Girls. Fire Lord Zuko and Mai will also appear in the graphic novel, with Mai posing as an academy teacher to look out for Kiyi, but struggling with her own past trauma while there.

The official description of the novel reads: “Kiyi, half-sister of Fire Lord Zuko, enrolls at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls! Known for her strict curriculum and even stricter instructors, Zuko worries about Kiyi. When things take a turn for the worse and…” When doubts arise about the new headmistress, Zuko takes action by appointing one of the people he trusts most, Mai, as an academy teacher. Can Mai keep a close eye on Kiyi and keep her on the right path? “The academy’s cruel culture shapes her footsteps into those of her other half-sister, Azula?”

Ashes of the Academy was written from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender Creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as well as veteran Avatar: The Last Airbender Graphic novel authors Faith Erin Hicks, Peter Wartman and Adele Matera. The novel will be released on March 25, 2025 and is currently available for pre-order through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, retailing for $12.99. Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s sister series, The Legend of Korra, will release a new graphic novel on February 26, 2024.
