The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) will host the Girls Tennis Individual State Championships from Monday, October 28th to Wednesday, October 30th. For the first time, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing will host this special event. Previously, the girls’ singles championships were held on the outdoor courts at Central Park in Schenectady after working at Sportime in Schenectady for three years. All four NYSPHSAA tennis events (boys and girls) will be held at the National Tennis Center over the next four years.

The tournament begins early Monday with 96 student-athletes competing in singles and doubles. Two rounds of matches will be played on the first day, followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and consolation matches on the second day. The tournament then ends with the final and medal round on the third day.

“Each fall, the NYSPHSAA Singles and Doubles Championships provide tennis’ top athletes the opportunity to compete for the top eight medal spots in each event. These participants were culled from the over 6,000 NYSPHSAA tennis players across the state through league and sectional qualifying tournaments,” said Chris Horgan, Girls Tennis State Coordinator. “It should be a very exciting state tournament again this year.”

In 2023, Nina Wiese of Garden City High School (VIII) won the individual state championship. In doubles, Matilda Buchen and Julia Stabile from Westhampton Beach (XI) won the state championships. Matilda Buchen returns to defend her doubles this year, albeit with a new partner, Ava Borruso.

Nina Weise of Garden City (Section VIII) won the 2023 singles championship after defeating Olivia Dartawan of Niskayuna (Section 2) in the final. While Weise was graduating, Dartawan, just a sophomore, qualified for the 2024 tournament.

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, one of the largest public tennis facilities in the world, hosts the US Open and its central arena, Arthur Ashe Stadium. It operates year-round, hosting players, programs and events on the grounds and at its indoor training center.

The event is free and open to the public. The schedule is below. For more information about this event, visit the Girls Individual Tennis Championship page.
