Shelton defeats Rublev in Basel; Zheng reaches the semi-finals in Tokyo

American Ben Shelton reached the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland, on Friday, defeating top seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4.

Shelton took two hours and 15 minutes to advance, hitting 13 aces, winning 73 percent of his first serve points, breaking serve twice and never losing his own throw.

The 22-year-old will next face number 7 seed Arthur Fils in the semi-finals. Fils ousted No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(5), 6-3.

Number 4 seed Holger Rune and Canadian Denis Shapovalov will still be in action on Friday.

Musetti ousts Zverev

Italy’s Lorzeno Musetti scored a big win in Vienna, Austria on Friday, defeating top seed Alexander Zverev 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

In a match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes, Musetti used 36 wins to equalize his overwhelming opponent. Musetti will next face Britain’s Jack Draper.

The No. 7 seed defeated Tomas MacHac 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and seven minutes.

Number 2 seed Alex de Minuar and Russian Karen Khanchaov will be in action later today.

Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis – Tokyo, Japan

Top seed Qinwen Zheng advanced to the semifinals on Friday in Tokyo, Japan, defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.

The Chinese star will next face Diana Shnaider. The Russian received a walkover from Sayaka Ishii in the quarterfinals.

Zheng added seven aces and five breaks of serve in her victory over Fernandez.

Elsewhere, No. 9 seed Katie Boulter defeated former US Open champion Bianca Andresscu 6-2, 6-1, and Sofia Kenin beat recent winner from Ningbo, China and No. 3 seed Daria Kasatkina 6: 3, 6:4.

Siniakova reaches semifinals in Guangzhou

No. 1 seed Katerina Siniakova reached the quarterfinals on Friday in Guangzhou, China, beating American Bernarda Pera 6-4, 7-5.

The top seed will next face Olga Danilovic for a place in the final.

In the other semi-final on Saturday, Lucia Bronzetti will face Caroline Dolehide.
