At an Oct. 24 hearing before D.C. Superior Court Judge Judith Pipe, a jury found the shooting defendant guilty on all counts.

Cornellius Ruffin, 41, was found guilty of assault with serious bodily injury while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm with a prior offense and carrying a pistol without a weapon license, possession of an unregistered firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition for his involvement in a non-fatal shooting on April 12, 2021 in the 200 block of Bates Street, NW.

During the three-day trial, prosecutors confirmed that Ruffin fired in broad daylight, hit a victim, passed the gun to another suspect and “casually” rode away on his bicycle.

Ruffin’s attorney, Steven LoGerfo, claimed no one could identify Ruffin as the shooter. Several eyewitnesses testified, and although none in court were able to identify Ruffin as the shooter, several of them provided photos of the suspects taken from their apartment windows, as well as descriptions of the clothing they saw the suspects wearing.

When officers searched Ruffin’s apartment, they found clothing that matched what witnesses described.

The jury returned from deliberations on October 24 and returned a guilty verdict on all counts.
