Double victory for Dores

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team won both doubles matches at the June Stewart Invitational on Friday.

The Dores began singles play, with senior Amy Stevens facing off against Clemson’s Gaia Parravicini. Stevens opened the match with a 6-3 win in the first set, but Parravicini leveled the score after a 7-5 win in the second set. The Tigers used the momentum to pull ahead 10-5 in the tiebreaker and win the game. Junior Sonya Macavei faced another Clemson opponent, Annabelle Davis. After losing 6-3 in the first set, Macavei got revenge in the second with a 6-3 victory. Vanderbilt was eliminated again in the tiebreaker, and Davis won the final frame 10-5.

Freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar sued Clemson’s Romana Cisovska. Although Vijayakumar went down early after losing 6-1 in the first set, he fought back in the next set to win the second set 6-3. A back-and-forth tiebreaker once again fell to Clemson and Cisovska secured the match win with a 10-6 tiebreaker victory. Freshman Sophia Webster earned the fourth tiebreaker of the day in a tough matchup against Clemson’s Candela Yecora and suffered a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 loss to her Tiger opponent. Freshman Jayden Jagolinzer was the only member of the team to earn an individual win Friday. The Dore completely controlled their match against Autumn Rabjohns of Northwestern, earning a 7-5, 7-5 win.

Vanderbilt bounced back with much-needed wins in doubles. The pair of Macavei and Vijayakumar defeated Kiley Rabjohns and Neena Feldman of Northwestern 7-5. Stevens and Jagolinzer continued the Dores’ double-header success with an intraconference victory, defeating SEC opponents Elizabeth Eades and Ellie Myers of Kentucky 6-0.

Singles matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow, with Vanderbilt set to face Purdue opponents. The doubles matches will follow at 10 a.m. at the earliest.
