Ashlyn Watkins of South Carolina has had her first court date postponed

South Carolina junior girls basketball Ashlyn Watkins is still barred from team activities after her first court date was postponed until Friday afternoon.

The Greenville News reported Friday morning that Watkins’ attorney, Todd Rutherford, was in court Friday morning in Lexington County.

The Colombia forward was arrested on August 31 on charges of assault and first-degree kidnapping and released on $30,000 bail. The arrest resulted in an automatic suspension from all team activities, including the team’s trip to the White House last month and its first friendly match ahead of the 2024-25 season last week.

Watkins was and still is not required to appear at the initial court date, but the original date scheduled for Oct. 25 has been postponed until next week, according to the Richland County Clerk of Court. No further information about the date and time was provided.

“We won’t move anything until their situation calms down a little,” said head coach Dawn Staley said Sept. 24: “It’s beyond our control.”

Staley confirmed to GamecockScoop at SEC Media Days on October 16 that there had been no change in her status and that the Progra was still waiting for the scheduled court date of October 25 before taking any further action.

South Carolina will play another exhibition game on October 28th before its season opener on November 4th against Michigan in Las Vegas
