Miamisburg Police offer tips for a safe Halloween trick-or-treating experience

Miamisburg Police offer tips for a safe Halloween trick-or-treating experience

MIAMISBURG, Ohio (WKEF) – Halloween season can be a spooky time in Miamisburg, but local officials and organizations are making sure it’s also a safe time.

“Anytime you have children out and about, you want to keep an eye on them,” said Sgt. Jon Thompson of the Miamisburg Police Department. “Especially if you have younger children, it is always important to have adult supervision. Make sure a trustworthy adult is with them.”

Miamisburg Police offer helpful tips for those preparing for the spookiest time of the year, especially those planning trick-or-treating.

Thompson recommends keeping an eye on your young children, traveling in groups, familiarizing yourself with the area and always inspecting your candy before putting it in your body.

Thompson continues: “You want to have mostly sealed packaging, that’s always safest, something that you can tell if it’s been tampered with. Anything that looks a little suspicious or just doesn’t look right, you might want to get rid of.”

Thompson says Miamisburg police have no major safety concerns on Halloween night.

But just in case anyone wants to do some “tricks” instead of “treats,” there will be multiple squads patrolling the neighborhoods, some handing out treats themselves.

Thompson added: “Normally we give our officers candy and send them on their way. The kids love to see us and we love to see them, and just being out there I think makes everything a little safer.”

Miamisburg Police say when it comes to your children, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

If your kids want to have a spooky but fun Halloween, they can stop by the Community Park Learning Center in Miamisburg on October 29th to experience a “Not So Scary” Haunted House.

“The age group we really want to focus on is the 5- to 10-year-old age group,” said Shelby Spurlock, program and community center manager for the Miamisburg Parks and Recreation Department. “You can have the experience of coming into a haunted house that is scary, but not that scary.”

Miamisburg’s first “Not So Scary Haunted House” will fill the Community Park Learning Center in Miamisburg with an array of Halloween activities for young children.

Between arts and crafts, an obstacle course and a best costume contest, kids in and around Miamisburg will have a lot of fun.

In the name of safety, the event will be monitored by staff and volunteers trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
