Police are working to locate the suspect in the Statesboro shooting

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) – A shooting late Wednesday night near downtown Statesboro left one person injured and one suspect remaining at large.

Officers with the Statesboro Police Department are actively working to locate the primary suspect in Wednesday night’s shooting, 41-year-old Akeino Dickerson.

On Wednesday around 8:50 p.m., officers responded to a call on Bobby Donaldson Avenue.

When they arrived, officers said they found the 24-year-old female victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

“They find she has a gunshot wound to her back. It’s a through and through, so they go ahead and provide help there. They are transporting her to East Georgia and from there she is flying to Memorial because it is a gunshot wound,” said Statesboro Police Capt. Jared Akins.

She has since been released from the hospital in Savannah.

Police say their suspect is the victim’s former boyfriend, 41-year-old Akeino Dickerson.

“She and another civilian witness in the area point out a house where Mr. Dickerson once lived,” Akins said.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the home where they said they found key evidence in the case, but were unable to find Dickerson.

“Since then we have made several attempts to contact family and friends only to have them extradite him. There are signs that he may be considering family members about this, but of course we can’t wait for him to do that. So the case has been referred to the U.S. Marshal Service, and if he doesn’t do the right thing and turn himself in, they’re obviously going to look for him wherever he goes,” Akins said.

As this is an ongoing investigation, we will update you all as we learn more.
