St. Francis of Assis School reunited weeks after devastating fire – NBC10 Philadelphia

It’s been a tough three weeks for St. Francis of Assisi School in Delaware County after a fire destroyed one of its buildings.

The children and teachers at St. Francis in Springfield gathered for their annual dance.

The headteacher, Ms Nicole Hamilton, was so enthusiastic about the activities on Friday 25 October that she led the conga line wearing a cow costume.

“Wonderful day,” Ms. Hamilton told NBC10.

Today’s fun comes just three weeks after a fire broke out on October 7th in the building where the younger children take their classes. The school’s main office was also located in the affected building. It happened just a few hours after the school day ended.

The school community says things have not been the same since.

“It’s definitely strange because the office was in that building. The nurse’s office and stuff, so we had to make some adjustments, but I think everyone is comfortable now,” said eighth-grader Briana Meliti.

The fire was bad in many ways, but the worst part was that it separated the younger students from the older ones. The younger children now have their lessons at another school nearby.

The Dance Marathon on Friday takes place every year, but the 2024 edition has a very special meaning because it was a reunion.

“This morning we had a prayer service. Just here you could see that everyone is so excited to have each other back. The big children hug the little children. It’s wonderful,” Ms Hamilton said.

There is great optimism for the future as officials try to determine what caused the fire and the school works on rebuilding plans.

The children of St. Francis of Assisi are strong and have good things ahead.

“It’s a great community and it’s just going to be a thousand times better,” said eighth-grader Helana Babcock.

The local Chick-fil-A provided lunch. Many greetings and hugs to this school on Friday with lots of smiles and endless dancing.
