Centennial Park is getting new tennis and basketball courts

Centennial Park, Castle Rock’s oldest park, is receiving more than $1 million in renovations to its courts and facilities.

Upgrades to the park include new tennis and basketball courts, shaded courtside seating, improved sidewalk accessibility and additional accessible parking.

Castle Rock acquired the 10-acre park in the 1970s and is now home to the playgrounds, Burgess Pool, a playground, a sports field and open space.

Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Brauer said surveys of residents have shown broad support for upgrades to Centennial Park.

“Key takeaways included support for replacing our tennis courts and providing shaded seating in the park,” Brauer said.

Centennial Park’s current tennis and basketball courts are more than 40 years old and need replacing. As part of the project, three new tennis courts and a new basketball court will be built, bringing them to the required size.

“We know our tennis and basketball courts are in need of repair,” Brauer said.

New shaded seating will be installed next to the tennis courts. Walkways in the park will be made more accessible and two accessible parking spaces will be added on Castle Rock Baptist Church property, shared by the church and the park.

The Castle Rock City Council unanimously approved a $564,300 contract with Renner Sports Surfaces for construction of the new playgrounds and a $644,275 contract with SaBell’s Civil and Landscaping for the remaining project work.

Construction on the park is expected to begin soon and be completed by next summer, Brauer said.
