Phoenix breaks a daily heat record on Friday

PHOENIX – Daily heat records are back on the menu as Phoenix broke another record Friday afternoon.

The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, reached 97 degrees at 2:15 p.m. The previous record of 96 degrees was set in 2014 and 1990.

Phoenix also likely hit a daily low record of 65 degrees, also set in 1897.

Daily heat records are the norm in Phoenix this fall

The valley hasn’t had much time to recover from an unprecedented 21-day record heat streak that ended last week.

Additionally, Phoenix is ​​on track to have its hottest October on record in a year that already saw the hottest June and September months.

The average October temperature in Phoenix was 87 degrees Thursday, nearly nine degrees above normal.

The hottest October in Phoenix history occurred in 2023, with an average temperature of 82.7 degrees.
