MTG X Spongebob Secret Lair announced

MTG X Spongebob Secret Lair announced

No, that’s not a joke. This is Patrick.

A new MTG crossover between Secret Lair and Spongebob Squarepants was officially announced today. Appearing as a tweet on the official MTG Secret Lair Twitter page is quickly causing people to lose their minds.

MTG X Spongebob Secret Lair

An MTG X Spongebob crossover seems strange. Still, this announcement is as official as it gets. At some point in 2025, MTG players will likely be able to play Spongebob as a commander.

When this revelation was made official, many MTG players believed it was a prank. While the Fortnite Secret Lair that took place a while ago has some similarities in nature, it is an IP that many MTG players would never have expected in the game’s crossover era.

Regardless, many players are hoping to scream “MY LEG” in happy agony in their upcoming Commander games.

Open the floodgates

A Secret Lair crossover with a crazy icon like Spongebob really sets a new standard for possible crossovers we might see in the future. At one time, something like Secret Lair X Shrek may have seemed a little too unrealistic. Now it’s completely within the realm of possibility.

After Spongebob was introduced to the masses, players weren’t afraid to push forward with their dream Secret Lairs. MTG X Jimmy Neutron and MTG X Avatar: The Last Airbender are some commonly requested titles.

This makes Avatar: The Last Airbender seem incredibly realistic. Avatar and Spongebob are both Nickelodeon IPs, so the chances of seeing Aang are quite high. Avatar’s overall more serious atmosphere may also be a better fit for Magic than the secret Krabby Patty formula.

Honestly, there are a lot of iconic Spongebob moments that could be turned into cards. MY LEG could easily be some sort of incredible removal spell. Personally, I would like a Duress with Squidward just playing his clarinet.

This Secret Lair will definitely have its fans. If it succeeds, we can expect to see more cartoon-nostalgia-filled Secret Lairs on the way on Saturday mornings.
