The first day of the WAC Fall Invitational for men’s and women’s tennis comes to an end

ABILENE, Texas – A successful first day at the Western Athletic Conference Fall Invitational concluded for the UT Arlington men’s and women’s tennis programs at the John TL Jones Tennis Complex on the Abilene Christian campus.

“We had a great day today,” said head coach Diego Benitez. “We won three of our four games that day.”

Pedro Sasso And Andres Medus Both reached the semi-finals on Saturday October 26th after taking care of business in the quarter-finals this morning.

Medus, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 3 seed Filip Stipic of Seattle U 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Medus advances to the semifinals and will face No. 2 seed Daniel Morozov of Abilene Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The No. 4 seed Sasso defeated Grand Canyon’s Andres Loizas, the No. 5 seed, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a hard-fought match. Sasso will face No. 1 seed Nikita Volonski of GCU on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“Andy and Pedro had to go all the way,” Benitez said. “I was proud of the way they finished the games.”

On the women’s side Ana Paula Jimenez The No. 2 overall seed defeated No. 10 seed Mariana Zurita Berdecio of Utah Tech 6-3, 6-2. Jimenez advances to the semifinals, where she will face No. 3 seed Emma Persson of Tarleton State.

“Ana played really well, she was super organized and consistent,” said Benitez. “She looked under control the whole game.”

Newbie Adela Latalova lost to Tarleton State’s Noelia Lorca 6-2, 6-3 in her first WAC appearance in the first round.

Saturday October 26th is the first action we’ll see during the tournament in both men’s and women’s doubles. For the men, Yazid Lahjomri teams up with Sasso to face ACU’s Daniel Morozov and Ethan Scribner at 9 a.m. With the women Valeriia Ivanovskaia teams with Jimenez as the No. 2 seed to face Seattle U’s Lamija Avdic and Liliya Dimova at 9 a.m

Winners of the invitational tournament will qualify for the ITA Conference Masters Nov. 7-10 in Rome, Georgia, to attempt to compete in the NCAA singles and doubles championships in Waco later in November.
