Volleyball falls to No. 20 Dayton Friday night

NEW YORK – Fordham University Volleyball opened a three-game stretch at Rose Hill Gym, falling to No. 20 Dayton in straight sets on Friday afternoon.

Early in the game, Dayton scored the first 16 points, eight per team, and pulled away with a quick run. He later stopped a Fordham rally to pull away with a 25-17 victory in the first set. A strong second set from the Maroon and White gave the home team an early lead, improving by as many as six points and leading 14-9 midway through the period.

Dayton came back late in the set and battled back to earn a 25-21 win and prevent the Rams from becoming just the second team to drop a set from the Flyers in league play this season. The guests stepped on the gas in the third set, took a commanding lead out of the gate and secured a 25:8 win on Friday evening to win the game.

Lorenza Rosenkilde drove the offense with six kills and hit .417 for the match, followed by five kills Audrey Brownwhile Emma Stammeyer Distributed 10 assists, ahead of eight of Whitney Woodrow. Ryan Nauman would collect 15 digs to 14 from Moody and nine each from Stammeyer and Zoe Talabong.

Playing against the No. 20 team in the country, the Rams drew nine times and changed the lead three times over the course of the first frame. Fordham and Dayton were tied at eight each before the Flyers tried to break away with a quick run. Dayton struggled against the home team and had to call a timeout after a series of points from the Rams, but was able to maintain the lead with a 25-17 win.

Fordham dominated from the start in the second set, taking 10 of the first 14 points, their largest lead of the night. As the Flyers continued to fight back, the Rams worked hard to fend off opponents, leading to a 19-1 lead where Dayton pulled away, closing out the frame and taking a two-sets-to-nil lead. A one-sided third set saw the visitors take a big lead early on and claim a 25-8 victory in the third set to win the match in straight sets.
