Living ideas: Neutral design for baby rooms

Living ideas: Neutral design for baby rooms

“If a room, especially a child’s room, can’t grow, then I haven’t done my job,” says Lindsey Crowley. As a father of four children under the age of seven, the founder of Lindsey Crowley Interiors knows a thing or two about designing flexible nurseries. Your secret? Choosing investment pieces that can be used in later versions of the room or elsewhere in the house (this Dover nursery is slated to be converted into a guest room at some point). Items that aren’t necessary in the long run, like the crib, or those that are sure to break, like the carpet, may be cheaper.

1 Crowley covered the room in forest wallpaper by Bunny Williams for Lee Jofa. “It incorporates the surrounding trees, but not too literally,” she says. “It’s a soft, almost abstract background.”

2 Curtains made from a tiny, textured polka dot fabric from Zak+Fox emphasize the earthy tone-on-tone pattern. Decorative and pinch pleats create a finished look that isn’t overly sophisticated but still fits a guest room. And the curtains are neutral enough to match almost any decor.

3 Rattan lighting combines natural textures, different shapes and brass parts. “Juxtaposition makes a room look interesting, so I always incorporate different shapes, eras and styles,” says Crowley.

4 Vinça Monadé’s boldly saturated artwork by Hubert Cuillé transformed the space from sweet to cool. Burl wood frames are less severe than painted or gilded wood and represent another natural material. Above the nativity scene, a summary by Holly Addi of Libby Silvia Artstyle is equally unexpected. (The blanket and pillows are for decorative purposes only.)

5 The Lulu and Georgia wool rug has an irregular grid pattern that anchors the room and counteracts the loose movement of the wallpaper. Plus, it’s soft, doesn’t shed, and hides spills.

6 Crate & Barrel’s natural lambskin chair and ottoman are delicious. “The chair in the nursery is so important,” says Crowley. “I know she cuddles the baby in it all day, every day.” The plaster side table is practical and sturdy.
