Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic, Quaker Valley advance to PIAA team tennis tournament

Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic and Quaker Valley are still in the hunt to win state team tennis titles.

All three won PIAA playoff quarterfinal games in Hershey on Friday and advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.

In Class 2A, WPIAL champ North Catholic (19-1) defeated District 3 runner-up Lancaster Country Day 4-1. Evelyn Marche at No. 3 singles and the doubles teams Katie Hardy and Jessica Sinclair and Ava Conley and Macaria Stall won matches for North Catholic, which will face District 1 champion Lower Moreland in the semifinals.

WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley (15-2) defeated District 3 champion Berks Catholic 4-1. The Quakers swept the singles with straight-set wins from Kirsten Close, Avery Allan and Jay Olawaiye and picked up a win in No. 1 doubles from Livia Jobbins and Jane Lenhard.

Quaker Valley will face District 2 champion Scranton Prep in the semifinals.

In Class 3A, WPIAL champion Mt. Lebanon (17-0) didn’t drop a set in a 5-0 win over District 2 champion Abington Heights. Jackie Tang, Michelle Yang and Elena Tatel survived the singles matches, as did Sylvie Eriksen and Sarah Stroh and Alejandra Garcia and Maggie Meehan in the doubles.

The Blue Devils will face District 1 champion Lower Merion in the semifinals.

Lower Merion beat Shady Side Academy 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Brooke Henderson won at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs (14-3). Bethel Park lost 3-0 to District 1 runner-up Council Rock South.
