Another chapter in the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry will be written this weekend. Both teams could use a victory in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy as a boost to their season.

Reigning national champion Michigan is struggling to find its identity in 2024, particularly on offense. The Wolverines have lost their last two games, and their last loss was a particularly bad 21-7 loss to Illinois. Jack Tuttle, the team’s third starting quarterback this season, threw for 208 yards and one interception on 32 pass attempts.

Michigan’s defense has still shown signs of life in the first half of the season, but it has allowed the Fighting Illini to rush for 187 yards, which could be a problem this weekend.

That’s because Michigan State just shot the ball down Iowa’s throat in its 32-20 win over the Hawkeyes. The Spartans totaled 212 rushing yards in the game and quarterback Aidan Chiles finished the game with 307 total yards. Two Michigan State receivers, Nick Marsh and Montorie Foster Jr., eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

The Spartans will have to go on the road in this game, and they have struggled in their last two road contests. They suffered a 21-point loss to Oregon a few weeks ago and are coming off a 23-19 loss to Boston College in Week 4.
