Portland dominates after first day of Gonzaga Invite

SPOKANE, Wash. – Portland women’s tennis had a perfect day, opening the Gonzaga Invitational 5-0 in doubles and then 6-0 in singles on Friday. The Pilots will continue on Saturday, with their final games scheduled for Sunday at Stevens Center.

In top doubles, the tandem of Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez earned two wins against opponents from Eastern Washington and Montana by margins of 6-2 and 6-1, respectively. They will be joined in the semifinals by Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Lexie Flores, winners against teams from Utah State and Gonzaga.

Meagan Pearson and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez also won their only red draw doubles match 6-1 against a tandem from Utah State.

The singles matches followed the same pattern, with Rubio Perez picking up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Utah State’s Indya Nespor in the top division. Arbaizar Martinez defeated Niyati Kukreti of Utah State in straight sets and Pethybridge also defeated Larissa Teramura of Seattle U.

At the Blue Draw, Flores picked up a three-set win over Seattle U’s Lola Tavcar and Dimitrijevice defeated Olivia Halvorsen 6-4, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals.

Pearson capped the perfect day with a 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal win over Shivika Agrawal of Montana in the red draw.
