Lumberjacks Defeat Cowgirls; Kelly breaks the second program record

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese lost 3-0 to Stephen F. Austin in his return to Cowgirl Field on Friday night while seeing the goalie Jackie Kelly breaking a program record for goaltending appearances.

Coach quote: “I thought our girls came out with some grit and fighting spirit. I think we had a good game plan in the first half and did a good job except for one shot and didn’t create much.” [of shots]but enough to give us a chance. I thought they made some good adjustments at halftime and we had to make up for their adjustments and that kind of surprised us.”

The playing field side:

• Kelly broke the program record with 63 goaltending games, surpassing the record held by Emma Roccaforte for three seasons.
• Kelly made six saves in the game Celeste Marijnissen count two.
• 22 Cowgirls saw action on the field, while SFA featured 23 players.
• McNeese was outscored 32-5 by SFA, with two shots on goal for the Pokes and 11 goals for the Lumberjacks.
• SFA scored 10 corners on the night, with McNeese saving three of them.
Morgan Schooley has the longest active streak of consecutive minutes for the Pokes at 810.
• Kelly played 783 consecutive minutes before freshman Marijnissen entered the game.
Anna Kovats and Schooley were the only players to play all 90 minutes against the Lumberjacks.

How it happened:

• SFA’s Jayme Bailey scored the game’s first goal at 4:23 on an assist from Maddie Bowers.
• Maddie Bowers scored the game’s second goal at 60-42 in the second half, assisted by Jayme Bailey.
• Caelynn January scored the third and final goal for the Lumberjacks on an assist from Alexa Alvarez with less than eight minutes to play.

Next: McNeese stays home to host HCU at Cowgirl Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as Coach Fitzgerald takes on his former assistant Coach Whiting.
