The Great Debate promotes students’ civic engagement

AUBURN, AL. (EETV) – Auburn University held its annual Grand Debate at the Ralph Brown Draughon Library this Tuesday, two weeks before Election Day. Representatives from the College Democrats and College Republicans organizations debated public policy, foreign policy and economics.

“Civic engagement is the most important thing Americans have, and practicing it as a college student … gives you experience for the political future as an older voter who may be engaged on issues,” said Ian Gunn, vice president of the College Democrats .

The student-moderated debate included set speaking times and offered students rebuttals to respond to opponents. Gunn and Thomas Williams represented the College Democrats, while Luke Troutman and Madeline Baer represented the College Republicans. Around 70 students were present.

“We had a full house here tonight, so we gave real students the opportunity to give live feedback. That’s what you’re supposed to do: If you don’t like something, advocate for change,” said Troutman, president of the College Republicans.

The full debate can be viewed on the Eagle Eye TV YouTube channel.
