Could electric wallpaper soon heat our homes?

In Scotland, new electric wallpaper technology is currently being trialled in several homes in Glasgow. The idea is to create an efficient, sustainable and cost-effective way to heat older, poorly insulated apartment buildings.

This pilot is being run jointly by the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, the West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) and Glasgow City Council, with financial support from Scotland Beyond Net Zero, a network of researchers and academics working together to find You will find practical solutions to the challenges of climate change in Scotland.

The electric wallpaper concept is currently being tested in a dozen homes in Glasgow to assess its effectiveness as a clean heat source. The aim of this test phase is to find out whether it is possible to replace gas central heating with electric wallpaper in a reliable and environmentally friendly manner.

Many Scottish houses are among the oldest and most poorly insulated in Europe. In a country where gas central heating is the most common heating system, this results in significant CO2 emissions.

In this experiment, the wallpaper is attached to the ceiling and begins to heat up the room in less than three minutes. It combines copper strips and graphene to create a thin surface that can conduct electricity. Once operating, it emits invisible infrared rays that significantly heat the air. In addition to heating, it also helps improve air quality by reducing moisture and mold.

The concept has been tested for several months and the initial feedback from tenants has already been very positive. This research could have a major impact in Scotland, but also beyond, inspiring other projects of this kind elsewhere, helping to reduce carbon emissions from heating and helping to combat climate change more effectively. – AFP Relaxnews
