Van Zyl makes the weekend in the AAC backdraw

HOUSTON

– Tulane Leigh Van Cyl scored an individual victory in the consolation round of the American Athletic Conference Fall Championships in Houston on Friday.

The native of South Africa from Paarl won 6:3, 3:6, 7:6 (5) over Emily Meyer from Memphis. She will now face Kristina Kurdyavtseva of Wichita State in the semifinal backdraw at 9 a.m.

teammate Micah Pierce is eliminated from singles competition after being defeated by Stanislava Shulzhenko of North Texas 6-2, 6-1 on Friday afternoon.

Tulane’s duo also fell short in the doubles competition, as the group’s top seeds, Mille-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska of Florida Atlantic, defeated the Green Wave 8-4.

The American Individual Championships will be held for the first time in 2024 as the conference determines the men’s and women’s singles and doubles champions. The singles and doubles champions will represent the American Athletic Conference at the ITA Conference Masters Championships November 7-10 in Rome, Georgia.

Two singles players and one doubles tandem from each of the 11 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams in the American Athletic Conference will compete for the singles titles.
