Blind Date: “She’s the type of person who makes time fly by” | relationships

Sophie about Jack

What were you hoping for?
Someone who writes that their first impression of me was “love at first sight.” If that doesn’t work, a good laugh.

First impressions?
Very charming and happy. He stood up to greet me with a welcoming hug.

What were you talking about?
Georgia (the country). What sport would we do all day if we didn’t have to work? Product design (we had both studied it at university). If it were strange to frame this item and hang it on my wall. And my one true love: Herefordshire.

Most embarrassing moment?
He called Herefordshire, Hertfordshire. I let it go and attributed it to being spoken softly but crying inside. I suggested we make pig faces in front of the windows for our selfie, which I thought he found a bit strange.

Good table manners?
Very good: He didn’t spill any food or drinks on his white T-shirt.

The best thing about Jack?
He is excellent at asking questions and engaging in conversations.

questions and answers

Fancy a blind date?

Show

Blind Date is Saturday’s dating column: every week, two strangers are paired up for dinner and drinks and then tell us all about it by answering a series of questions. This appears, with a photo we take of each date before the date, every Saturday in Saturday Magazine (in the UK) and online at theguardian.com. It’s been around since 2009 – you can read all about how we put it together here.

What questions will I be asked?
We ask about your age, location, profession, hobbies, interests and the type of person you would like to meet. If you think these questions don’t cover everything you want to know, tell us what’s on your mind.

Can I choose who I match with?
No, it’s a blind date! However, we ask you a little about your interests, preferences, etc. – the more you tell us, the better the match.

Can I select the photo?
No, but don’t worry: we select the most beautiful ones.

What personal information is displayed?
Your first name, profession and age.

How should I answer?
Honest but respectful. Pay attention to how it affects your date and that Blind Date reaches a large audience both in print and online.

Will I see the other person’s answers?
No. We may edit yours and theirs for various reasons, including length, and may ask you for further details.

Will you find me as the one?
We will try it! Wedding! Babies!

Can I do it in my hometown?
Only if it’s in the UK. Many of our applicants live in London, but we would like to hear from people who live elsewhere.

Thank you for your feedback.

Would you introduce Jack to your friends?
Absolutely. I’m sure they would like him.

Describe Jack in three words.
Curious, funny and motivated.

What do you think Jack made of you?
It wasn’t love at first sight, but hopefully he thought I was having a good time.

Have you moved on somewhere?
No, we went our separate ways.

And…did you kiss?
Not this time.

If you could change one thing about this evening, what would it be?
We would have made pig faces in our photo.

Grades from 0 to 10?
8. Jack was an excellent blind date.

Would you see each other again?
Jack was lovely and I had a great evening, but there was nothing romantic about it for me. But I would be happy to be best friends with him.

Jack and Sophie on their date

Jack about Sophie

What were you hoping for?
A fun date with chemistry and a good mood. And to avoid doing anything embarrassing, have it printed in a national newspaper.

First impressions?
Calm and confident, especially since she was sent to the wrong restaurant but still managed to show up on time.

What were you talking about?
Her appearances on reality TV shows. How her personality revolves around a trip to Georgia… I think we were both pleasantly surprised at how much we had in common.

Most embarrassing moment?
She said she would put our picture together and put it in a place of honor in her family home.

Good table manners?
I was relieved that the waiter was there and reminded us which one was the appetizer fork.

The best thing about Sophie?
A professional Yapper full of interesting questions and funny stories. We talked for over three hours and only scratched the surface.

Would you introduce Sophie to your friends?
Sophie is the type of person who makes time fly by, so why not!

Describe Sophie in three words.
Creative, funny and interesting.

What do you think Sophie made of you?
I’m impressed that I recently graduated with 3-in-1 shower gel.

Have you moved on somewhere?
We accompanied each other to the train station.

And…did you kiss?
NO.

If you could change one thing about this evening, what would it be?
As far as first dates go, I can’t find anything wrong with that. But it felt more like a friend date than a date date.

Grades from 0 to 10?
8. There was just no romantic spark.

Would you see each other again?
I don’t understand why not as friends.
