After Day 1 in Tucson, Utah Swim and Dive is just around the corner

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Utah swimming and diving team wrapped up the first day of a two-day clash with the University of Arizona Wildcats on Friday night at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Arizona, with both men’s and women’s teams taking first place.

“I’m very happy about today’s meeting,” said head coach Jonas Persson“We are in a great position to continue the meet tomorrow and I expect them to fight hard for the win.”

With multiple time drops and seven first-place finishes, both men’s and women’s teams finished the first day in Tucson with renewed energy.

Time falls

  • The women’s 200-yard medley relay team shaved 1.11 seconds off their time to earn second place to open the meet for the Utes.
  • Three Utes lost time in the women’s junior 1,000-yard freestyle event Chloe Thompson with a decrease of 4.36 in the second year Ece Yildirim fell 11.94 seconds behind and was a senior Molly Jacobson He lost 13.23 seconds and ended up in fifth place.
  • Four men lost time in the 1,000-yard free: Sophomores Nick Chirafisi fell 22.76, newbie Owen Carlsen fell 7.53, senior Chance Ricca fell 8.20 seconds behind and was a newbie Quinn Jones started in 7.74 seconds.

  • At the conclusion of the meet, ten Utah swimmers lost time in the 100-yard freestyle, most of whom were freshmen Nolan Arnholt with a 1.48 defeat and junior Julia Bartel with a decrease of 1.03.

Looking for gold

  • The men’s 200-yard medley relay clocked a time of 1:29.39 to touch the wall first, giving Utah its first gold medal of the meet.
  • Chirafisi took gold in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:22.72.
  • Hay secured first place in the 200-meter dash after hitting the wall in 1:59.20.
  • Junior Brandon Miller collected gold after a time of 1:48.95 in the 200 dash.
  • In the 200-meter dash, Pope took first place with a time of 2:04.53.
  • McColley clocked a time of 2:16.41 in the 200, earning her first gold medal in the event.
  • Milner, a junior, secured the final gold medal of the night, scoring 50.46 points in the 100-yard free throw.

“We had an excellent day in the diving well,” said the head diving coach Richard Marschner. “We narrowly missed out on a couple of wins, but we did really well on the road.”

On the boards

  • Holly Waxman won her NCAA Zones Cut with a total of 316.28 in the 3m and also secured the silver medal.
  • Callie Eaglestone earned her first career medal with a third-place finish in the 3m, a total of 288.83 that will also put her in the NCAA zones in this event.
  • On the 1m side, Elias Petersen exceeded the zone average with a score of 347.78 and a silver medal.
  • Attila Bernatsky earned his first career medal with a third-place finish and a total score of 264.38.

Looking ahead

The Utes return home to host their first dual meet of the season against UNLV on November 1 at the Ute Natatorium.
