Taylor Swift supports Kamala Harris after debate

Taylor Swift officially endorsed Kamala Harris following the candidate’s debate with Donald Trump, posting a strong message on her Instagram Story following the ABC-hosted match, saying the vice president “fights for the rights and causes, which, in my opinion, are necessary.” Warrior who advocates for them. I think she is a level-headed, gifted leader and I believe we can achieve so much more in this country when we are guided by calm and not chaos.”

Swift wrote: “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a good time to learn about the current issues and these candidates’ positions on the issues that matter most to you. As a voter, I make sure I watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”

She continued: “It was recently brought to my attention that an AI was posted on his website showing that ‘I’ was falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s candidacy for president. It really raised my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. From this I have come to the conclusion that as a voter I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election. The easiest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

Encapsulating the moment many fans have been waiting for since July, Swift continued, “I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election.” I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she’s for the Fights for rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to stand up for them. I think she is a level-headed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we let calm, not chaos, guide us. I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice as Vice President @timwalz, who has been advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

“I did my research and made my choice,” she concluded. “Your research is entirely yours, and the decision is yours. I also want to say especially to first-time voters: remember that you must be registered to vote! I also find it much easier to vote early. I will link in my story where you can register and find appointments and information about early voting.”

“With love and hope,” she captioned the message, “Taylor Swift… childless cat lady.”

Accompanying the post was a photo of Swift with one of her cats, Benjamin Button, from the cover shoot taken when Time magazine named the singer Person of the Year last December. Swift’s endorsement of the “childless cat lady” was a swipe at Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s sharp comment that it was a key Democratic Party demographic.

Less than half an hour after the debate ended, approval increased. Vice presidential candidate Tim Walz had a chance to respond quickly because he was on air when Swift’s letter went out and was read to him by Rachel Maddow mid-interview on MSNBC.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift, especially,” Walz said in response to Maddow’s recitation of the star’s post. “I say this as a cat owner, as a fellow cat owner. That was eloquent and that was clear. And that’s the kind of courage we need in America to stand up.” He encouraged Swifties to visit Harris’ website to learn more about how they can support the campaign.

After the debate, Harris stopped by a Democratic rally in Philadelphia to speak briefly with supporters. According to Politico, Harris’ walk-off music at the party was…Swift’s “The Man.”

Fans of the singer recall that on the day of Harris’ debate with Mike Pence in 2020, Swift endorsed the Joe Biden/Harris ticket and said she wanted to “scream on TV” to support Harris.

Swift’s intentions in the election cycle were already the focus of a national discussion before Harris took the lead on the ballot in July. In past years when Swift has made a crucial campaign statement — ranging from a 2018 congressional run in Tennessee to the 2020 presidential election — she has typically waited until early October to issue a strong statement supporting the Democratic nominee. This time she didn’t wait for an “October surprise” and announced her support a month earlier than in the past.

Some had wondered whether Swift would respond immediately if Trump used his social media to “accept” the singer’s supposed support for him after his supporters posted largely fake images of “Swifties for Trump” activists, but the Superstar has stuck to her guns until now.

Although the singer had remained silent until now, many of her fans assumed that she would support Harris – and, with or without Swift at the helm, formed the group Swifties 4 Harris. A Zoom call organized by the group included politicians including Senator Elizabeth Warren and singer Carole King and raised more than $100,000 for the Harris-Walz campaign.
